Candidate Barack Obama made closing the prison camp at Guantanamo one of his first priorities. Now he and the Democrats seem to be dithering. On this edition of Portside, Burt Cohen talks with Rolling Stone columnist Mat Taibbi about Obama and the Democrats looking Bush-ish to the world. And speaking of changes in the world, in the second half, Burt speaks with reporter Jay Hartling in San Salvadorl. She was present at the inauguration of El Salvador's first left wing President Mauricio Funes, who was with the FMLN in their long war against the American-backed government.

Hi Burt,
Nice treatment of this very timely topic. Your 'Rolling Stone' interviewee was ideal for bouncing the question we all have as to President Obama's waffleling on closing Gitmo.

The whole world is watching to see if America can salvage any of it's former status as the home of the free. We're now known as the home of the free to torture and imprison without trial whenever we feel like it.

Obama must close Gitmo at the earliest possible point in time. There's not enough ink in DC to print legal briefs justifying the darkest period in American history bar none.

Hi Burt,
I can't tell if your comments section is functioning properly. Sorry if you got multiple copies of this.
